課程概述

The most polemical critique of Coetzee’s unrepresentable characters is expounded in Benita Parry’s “Speech and Silence in the Fictions of J.M. Coetzee.” In this essay, Parry criticizes Coetzee’s staging of “impossibility of representation,” “estrang[ing] the norms of reality, and work” (149), making characters “not... disarticulated presence[s] but… interlocutor[s]”(164). Aside from Parry, Nadine Gordimer, Coetzee’s compatriot and fellow writer, in the review of J.M. Coetzee’s work Life and Times of Michael K writes: “the presentation of truth and meaning of what white has done to black stands out on every page, celebrating its writer’s superb, unafraid creative energy as it does; yet denies the energy of the will to resist evil” (142).

Countering this line of critique, this course aims explore the oblique staging of unrepresentable characters in Coetzee’s works, especially in terms of structure and language, not to mention character developments and image building. in this sense, drawing from Levinas, Blanchot, Lyotard, and others, we try to explain how Coetzee’s staging of characters expresses an inexpressible ethical concern.

課程目標
The course aims to familiarize students with a theoretical framework of the contemporary ethics in relation to language, literary theory, and literature, leading to a re-thinking of Coetzee’s unrepresentable figures in the period of South Africa’s troubling history.
課程要求
Student is required to finish the assigned readings, and has to produce a portion of the thesis.
